The benefits of massage are many and undeniable for all people. However, there are some contraindications where massage cannot be performed or must be done gently and with special application.
- When there is a fever
- When there is inflammation in the area
- When the patient is unable to assume the appropriate position
- When there is a change in the normal skin color of the area
- When there is a contagious disease-virus (e.g. flu)
- When there are recent surgeries
- When under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication
- When there are allergies or particular skin sensitivities
- When there are abrasions or open wounds on the skin
- When there are sunburns or other burns that have not healed
- When there is severe arthritis in one or more areas
- When there is particularly high or low blood pressure
- When there is local or generalized dermatitis
- When there are serious vascular, cardiac or rheumatological problems
- When there are significant neurological or psychiatric illnesses
- When there are serious diseases of the musculoskeletal system

Some of the contraindications to massage are absolute and some are not. In non-absolute contraindications, the physiotherapist can perform a massage with varying intensity (e.g. mild or very light) in each area, depending on the problem.
Therefore, the physiotherapist must be informed before the massage treatment, about all the above possible cases. This information must be done in the context of trust and confidentiality and is a priority for Heraklion Massage Center.
